Complete Umrah Guide
The lesser pilgrimage — 4 essential steps to complete Umrah in accordance with the Sunnah
The Virtue of Umrah
Umrah is known as the "minor pilgrimage." Unlike Hajj, it can be performed at any time of the year and is highly recommended in Islam.
- Perform Ghusl (full body ritual wash) — the Prophet ﷺ performed Ghusl for Ihram (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 830)
- Men: Wear two white unstitched cloths (Izar and Rida). Remove all sewn clothing — the Prophet ﷺ said: "The muhrim should not wear a shirt, a turban, a hooded cloak, trousers, or leather socks" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1542, Sahih Muslim 1177)
- Women: Can wear any modest clothing — their regular clothes serve as their Ihram. Only the niqab (face veil) and gloves are prohibited for women (Sahih al-Bukhari 1838)
- Do NOT apply any perfume — perfume is prohibited on body and garments while in Ihram. The Prophet ﷺ commanded regarding a muhrim who died: "Do not perfume him" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1265, Sahih Muslim 1206)
- Pray two rak'ahs if it is not a makruh (disliked) time — the Prophet ﷺ prayed two rak'ahs at Dhul Hulayfah before entering Ihram (Sahih Muslim 1218)
Face the Qiblah and make the intention for Umrah in your heart. Then recite the Talbiyah:
Enter with your right foot and recite the dua for entering the mosque:
- Stop the Talbiyah when you reach the Black Stone to begin your first circuit (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 919 — Ibn Abbas (RA) reported the Prophet ﷺ stopped Talbiyah in Umrah when he touched the Stone)
- Ensure you have Wudu (ablution) — the Prophet ﷺ performed wudu then went to the Ka'bah and performed Tawaf (Sahih al-Bukhari 1597)
- Idtiba' (men): Place the middle of your Rida under the right arm and over the left shoulder, exposing the right shoulder (Abu Dawud 1883)
- Begin at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). If possible, kiss it or touch it. If not, face it and point with your right hand (Sahih al-Bukhari 1611-1613)
- Walk counterclockwise keeping the Ka'bah on your left — as the Prophet ﷺ did (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Raml (men only): Walk briskly with short steps in the first three circuits (Sahih Muslim 1261-1262)
- Complete 7 full circuits — as the Prophet ﷺ performed (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Cover both shoulders (men — end of Idtiba', which is only for Tawaf)
- Pray 2 rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, or anywhere in the Masjid — the Prophet ﷺ prayed behind Maqam Ibrahim after his Tawaf (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the 1st rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the 2nd (Sahih Muslim 1218 — Hadith of Jabir describing the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj)
- Walk from Safa to Marwah = 1 lap. Marwah back to Safa = 2nd lap — the Prophet ﷺ began at Safa (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Complete 7 laps total, ending at Marwah (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Men: Walk briskly / jog between the green markers (the valley floor) — the Prophet ﷺ walked briskly in the valley (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Women walk at a normal pace throughout
- Make abundant dua, dhikr, and recite Quran during the walk — the Prophet ﷺ made dua at Safa and Marwah (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Repeat the dua at Safa each time you reach Safa and Marwah (facing Ka'bah)
- Men: Shave the entire head (Halq — preferred) or trim the hair equally from all sides (Taqsir) — Allah says: "with heads shaved and [hair] shortened" (Quran 48:27; Sahih al-Bukhari 1728, Sahih Muslim 1302)
- Women: Trim approximately a fingertip's length from the ends of their hair (Taqsir only; women do not shave) — the Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no shaving for women; women should only shorten" (Sunan Abu Dawud 1984)
🎉 Your Umrah is now complete! All Ihram restrictions are now lifted. You may change into regular clothes, apply perfume, and resume all normal activities.
It is recommended to make abundant dua, pray nafl (voluntary) prayers, and spend time in worship at the Masjid al-Haram.
Complete Hajj Guide
The fifth pillar of Islam — a comprehensive guide to the 5 days of Hajj (8th–12th Dhul Hijjah)
The Obligation & Virtue of Hajj
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime upon every Muslim who is physically and financially able. Allah says: "And pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all people who are able to undertake it" (Quran 3:97).
Types of Hajj: Tamattu' (Umrah then Hajj — most recommended; the Prophet ﷺ said: "Had I not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have performed Umrah" — Sahih al-Bukhari 1568, Sahih Muslim 1218), Qiran (Umrah and Hajj combined in one Ihram), Ifrad (Hajj only). This guide follows Hajj al-Tamattu'.
Day 1 — Yawm al-Tarwiyah (8th Dhul Hijjah)
- Perform Ghusl (full ritual wash) — as the Prophet ﷺ did for Ihram (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 830)
- Put on your Ihram garments — same as Umrah (Sahih al-Bukhari 1542)
- Make the intention (Niyyah) for Hajj from your accommodation — the Companions entered Ihram for Hajj from their lodgings in Makkah on the 8th (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Recite the Talbiyah and continue reciting it frequently (Sahih al-Bukhari 1549)
Labbayk Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna al-ḥamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, lā sharīka lak.
- Head to Mina before or after Dhuhr prayer — as the Prophet ﷺ did (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr in Mina (Sahih al-Bukhari 1653)
- Shorten the 4-rak'ah prayers to 2 rak'ahs (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha) but do not combine them — pray each at its own time. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ as described in the hadith of Jabir (Sahih Muslim 1218).
- Spend the night in Mina — engage in dhikr, Quran recitation, and dua — as the Prophet ﷺ did (Sahih Muslim 1218)
Day 2 — Yawm 'Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah) — The Most Important Day
This is the most important day of Hajj. Standing at Arafah is the essential pillar — without it, the Hajj is invalid.
- After Fajr in Mina, head to 'Arafah while reciting the Talbiyah (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- At Dhuhr time, pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened (2 rak'ahs each, with one Adhan and two Iqamahs) — this is the Sunnah (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Spend the entire afternoon in supplication, dhikr, repentance, and crying to Allah — the Prophet ﷺ remained at Arafah making dua until sunset (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Face the Qiblah, raise your hands, and make abundant dua — the Prophet ﷺ faced the Qiblah and continued making dua (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- The Sunnah time of standing is from Dhuhr until sunset. However, standing at Arafah is valid from Dhuhr of the 9th until Fajr of the 10th — anyone who reaches Arafah at any point during this window has caught the Hajj
- After sunset, leave Arafah calmly for Muzdalifah — the Prophet ﷺ departed only after sunset (Sahih Muslim 1218). Continue reciting the Talbiyah.
- Upon arrival, pray Maghrib and Isha combined — Maghrib (3 rak'ahs) and Isha (shortened to 2 rak'ahs), with one Adhan and two Iqamahs (Sahih Muslim 1218 — Hadith of Jabir)
- Sleep under the open sky — the Prophet ﷺ lay down and slept until Fajr (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Collect 7 pebbles (chickpea-sized) for stoning the next day — you can also collect more later in Mina (Sahih Muslim 1218)
- Pray Fajr early at the beginning of its time — the Prophet ﷺ prayed Fajr at its earliest time at Muzdalifah (Sahih al-Bukhari 1683, Sahih Muslim 1218)
- After Fajr, face the Qiblah and make dua at al-Mash'ar al-Haram until it is very bright (Sahih Muslim 1218; Quran 2:198 — "Remember Allah at al-Mash'ar al-Haram")
- Then depart for Mina before sunrise, reciting the Talbiyah (Sahih Muslim 1218)
Day 3 — Yawm al-Nahr (10th Dhul Hijjah) — The Busiest Day
This is Eid al-Adha — the busiest day of Hajj with multiple rites to perform. The order of rites on this day (as per the Sunnah): Stoning → Sacrifice → Shaving → Tawaf al-Ifadah.
- Stop the Talbiyah before throwing the first pebble
- Stone only Jamrat al-'Aqabah (the largest pillar, closest to Makkah)
- Throw 7 pebbles, one at a time
- Say "Allāhu Akbar" with each throw
- Throw from the bottom of the valley, with Mina on your right and Makkah on your left (if possible)
- Time: After sunrise is the Sunnah (Sahih al-Bukhari 1671; Sahih Muslim 1296 — the Prophet ﷺ stoned after sunrise). After Fajr is permissible for those with excuse.
- Obligatory for Hajj Tamattu' and Qiran pilgrims
- A sheep/goat (one person) or share in a cow/camel (up to 7 people)
- Say "Bismillāh, Allāhu Akbar" at the time of slaughter
- If unable to afford it, fast 3 days during Hajj + 7 days upon returning home = 10 days total — "…and whoever cannot find [a sacrifice] — then a fast of three days during Hajj and seven when you have returned. Those are ten complete [days]" (Quran 2:196)
- The sacrifice can be done any time during the Days of Tashreeq (10th-13th)
- Most pilgrims arrange this through official Hajj sacrifice programs/vouchers
- Men: Shave the entire head (Halq — preferred) or trim equally
- Women: Trim a fingertip's length from the ends
- After this, you have achieved Tahallul al-Awwal (first release)
- Everything becomes permissible except intimate relations with your spouse
- You may now change into regular clothes, apply perfume, etc.
- Go to Masjid al-Haram in Makkah
- Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah — 7 circuits around the Ka'bah (same as Umrah Tawaf, but NO Idtiba' or Raml)
- Pray 2 rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim
- Perform Sa'i — 7 laps between Safa and Marwah (same method as Umrah)
- This Tawaf is a pillar (rukn) of Hajj — it cannot be skipped
- After this, you achieve Tahallul al-Thani (full release) — all Ihram restrictions are lifted
- This can be delayed to the 11th or 12th if needed
Return to Mina and spend the night there. Staying overnight in Mina on the nights of the 11th and 12th is obligatory (wajib).
Day 4 — 1st Day of Tashreeq (11th Dhul Hijjah)
- 1. Jamrat al-Sughra (smallest, furthest from Makkah): Throw 7 pebbles, saying "Allāhu Akbar" with each. Then stand aside facing Qiblah and make long dua.
- 2. Jamrat al-Wusta (middle): Throw 7 pebbles with takbir. Stand aside and make long dua.
- 3. Jamrat al-'Aqabah (largest, closest to Makkah): Throw 7 pebbles with takbir. Do NOT stand for dua after this one — leave directly.
- Spend the night in Mina — this is obligatory
- Engage in dhikr, takbir, Quran, and dua
- Recite the Takbirat of Tashreeq after every obligatory prayer:
Days 5–6 — 2nd & 3rd Days of Tashreeq (12th–13th Dhul Hijjah)
Repeat the stoning of all three Jamarat as on the 11th (after Dhuhr):
- Jamrat al-Sughra → 7 pebbles + dua
- Jamrat al-Wusta → 7 pebbles + dua
- Jamrat al-'Aqabah → 7 pebbles, no dua
Allah says in the Quran:
- Option 1 — Early departure (Nafr al-Awwal): After stoning on the 12th, leave Mina before sunset. If the sun sets while you are still in Mina, you must stay for the 13th.
- Option 2 — Stay for 13th (Nafr al-Thani — preferred): Spend the night, stone all three Jamarat again on the 13th, then depart. This is more rewarding.
- Before leaving Makkah, perform Tawaf al-Wada' (Farewell Tawaf)
- This is obligatory for all Hajj pilgrims — it should be the last act before departing
- 7 circuits around the Ka'bah, no Idtiba', no Raml, no Sa'i
- Pray 2 rak'ahs after Tawaf
- Exemption: Women in their menstrual period are excused from Tawaf al-Wada' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1755)
